Has the thought of wearing metal braces kept you from straightening your teeth? Many people would like straighter teeth but don't want to

wear metal wires and brackets for several years. Invisalign offers an excellent alternative to traditional braces. Franklin, KY, dentist Dr.

 J. David Fowler explains how Invisalign can improve your smile without drawing attention to your teeth.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligner trays to realign your teeth. The clear trays are designed to fit your teeth snugly and comfortably. You're probably wondering how you can straighten your teeth without wires or brackets. Your aligner trays exert gentle pressure on your teeth, gradually repositioning them. Trays are usually worn for two weeks, then replaced with a new set of trays.

Can both children and adults benefit from Invisalign?

Invisalign is an excellent option for older teens and adults. The aligners can be used to correct a variety of mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including under and overbites, crowding, gaps between teeth, crossbites and open bites. If you're a teenager, you can expect to wear Invisalign aligner trays for the same amount of time you would wear metal braces. Invisalign offers a special benefit for adults, who may only need to wear the trays for about a year, in some cases.

What benefits does Invisalign offer?

Invisalign offers important advantages that traditional braces don't such:

  • No Changes to Your Appearance: When you wear Invisalign, most people won't be aware that you're straightening your teeth. Although the aligner trays are very unobtrusive, you may wish to remove them for a few hours when you attend a special event or play your favorite sport. Usually, you'll wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day.
  • No Food Restrictions: Love popcorn? You can keep eating it when you wear Invisalign aligner trays. In fact, you can eat anything you want. You'll remove your trays before you eat and won't have to worry about damaging them with hard or sticky foods.
  • No Brushing or Flossing Difficulties: Your oral hygiene routine becomes much more complicated when you wear traditional braces. You have to be careful to avoid breaking wires and must use special flossing tools to floss. Since you'll also remove your trays to brush and floss, no special routines are needed.
